COMPARISON
Selected 2026 differences for owner-managed companies and people relocating from Sweden.
Ordinary company profit is generally untaxed when earned. Corporate Tax is deferred until profit is distributed or treated as distributed. Profit retained and reinvested in the company can therefore remain at 0% Corporate Tax while it stays in the business. Deemed distributions, including some non-business expenses, can still trigger tax.
A Swedish limited company pays 20.6% Corporate Tax on taxable company profit for the year, including profit retained inside the company.
Under Latvia’s standard system, €100 of profit before distribution tax results in €20 of company-level tax and €80 available to the shareholder. Qualifying dividends from profits already subject to Latvian Corporate Tax are generally exempt from ordinary Latvian personal dividend tax.
Latvia’s additional 3% personal tax can apply to the portion of total annual income above €200,000, including otherwise exempt dividends. That additional tax is not included in the €80 illustration.
€100 of taxable company profit less 20.6% Corporate Tax leaves €79.40. For qualifying shares in a closely held company, personal dividend tax is 20% within the applicable 3:12 allowance: €79.40 × 80% = €63.52.
* The Sweden figure assumes the dividend falls within that allowance. Taxation can differ above the allowance or for other share categories. These are separate domestic company-and-owner examples, not the tax outcome for a Swedish-resident owner of a Latvian company.
Latvia’s standard VAT rate is 21%. Sweden’s standard VAT rate is 25%. Reduced rates and exemptions exist in both countries. The standard-rate difference is not automatically a saving for a business that can recover input VAT.
The standard government registration fee for an ordinary SIA is €75. This is the government fee only, not the total cost of establishing or operating the company. Expedited processing and other services can cost extra.
Electronic registration of an aktiebolag costs SEK 2,400. This is the registration fee, not the full cost of establishing a company. Share capital and professional service costs are separate in both countries.
Eligible people covered by Latvia’s state-funded healthcare system pay a patient contribution of €2 for a family doctor visit when under 65 and €4 for a specialist visit. These rates concern state-funded services at participating providers; eligibility, referral requirements and exemptions apply.
Employment through a Latvian SIA and the required Latvian social contributions can give an owner-manager access, subject to the applicable insurance and registration rules. Company ownership or an eID alone does not establish entitlement.
The statutory minimum monthly salary for normal full-time hours in 2026 is €780. Where the statutory conditions apply, monthly company turnover above €3,900 (five minimum salaries), with nobody receiving at least the required minimum remuneration, can make a board member subject to deemed minimum employment income for tax and social contributions. Registration-year and qualifying group exceptions apply. This is not a blanket exemption from payroll obligations.
Sweden also has publicly funded healthcare. This comparison uses Stockholm’s standard SEK 275 outpatient patient fee for adults aged 18–84 at public or region-contracted providers. Other regions and types of care can have different fees. Exemptions and high-cost protection apply.
Numbeo’s current “Apartment (1 bedroom) in City Centre” category gives €517.29/month for Riga and €1,506.85/month for Stockholm. Both were taken from the same EUR table, updated 16 September 2026 at 14:55 CEST, and rounded to the nearest €10 for display.
This matches city-centre location, bedroom count, currency and source snapshot. It does not match individual apartments, floor area, furnishing or tenancy terms. These are indicative market/rental estimates, not guaranteed rents or official regulated-rent statistics. Utilities and individual lease costs should be checked separately.
Numbeo combines contributed observations and collected prices. Its rolling samples are not a survey confined to September 2026: data are normally within 12 months, with shorter windows in popular cities and possible use of older observations where fresh data are limited.
Numbeo’s current “Price per Square Meter to Buy Apartment in City Centre” category gives €2,736.46/m² for Riga and €10,086.65/m² for Stockholm. Both were taken from the same EUR table, updated 16 September 2026 at 14:55 CEST, and rounded to the nearest €10 for display.
These are indicative market estimates, not guaranteed transaction prices. The comparison matches city-centre apartment category, unit, currency and source snapshot. Buildings, legal ownership arrangements, condition, fees and exact neighbourhoods can differ. It is not a matched-property valuation.
The source uses rolling observations rather than a September-only transaction sample. Its usual data window is up to 12 months, with shorter windows in popular cities and limited use of older observations when fresh data are unavailable.
Selected 2026 comparison. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances, tax residence, ownership structure and applicable treaties. Open Details for assumptions and sources.
